Cover letters, and the AI tools that write them. Prices checked November 8, 2026.

Do recruiters read cover letters?

Most recruiters say they read cover letters when one is included: 76.5% in iHire's survey of 603 US hiring professionals and 87% in ResumeGo's survey of 236. ResumeGo's field experiment also found tailored letters drew 53% more callbacks than none. But every source is run by a career-services company and most are self-reported, so the evidence is thinner than the headlines.

The short answer

  • Send a letter when the application asks for one or has a field for it.
  • Make it specific to the job. In ResumeGo's survey, 81% of recruiters said they value tailored letters far more than generic ones.
  • It matters most when your resume needs explaining: a career change, a gap, a move.
  • Treat survey percentages as direction, not fact. Each comes from a company that sells resume help.

What do surveys say about whether recruiters read cover letters?

Surveys of hiring managers agree that most of them read cover letters at least some of the time, but they disagree on how often. Here is each source we could trace to its publisher, with its sample and date. We left out figures we could only find repeated on other blogs.

How much should you trust cover letter surveys?

Trust cover letter surveys for direction and not for precise numbers. Three problems run through all of them.

We found no independent, peer-reviewed study of cover letter reading rates that we could verify. A figure often quoted from a ResumeBuilder survey of 948 hiring managers turned up only on other blogs, so we left it out.

Do you need a cover letter in 2026?

You need a cover letter in 2026 when the application has a field or upload slot for one, when the posting asks for one, or when your resume leaves an obvious question. Skip it when the form offers nowhere to put it. The surveys suggest most readers look at a letter when it is there, and the one experiment suggests a specific letter beats none.

Make the letter specific. ResumeGo's experiment reports its 53% gain for tailored letters, and 81% of the recruiters it surveyed said they value tailored letters significantly more than generic ones. If you are short on time, a short, specific letter beats a long, general one.

When does a cover letter matter most?

A cover letter matters most when the resume alone would lead a reader to the wrong conclusion. That covers career changers, people returning after a gap, applicants moving cities, and anyone applying for a role a level up. For those readers we would write the letter with more care, and our picks for career changers explain which tools help.

For high-volume applications to similar roles, the letter matters less one by one but still adds up. The high-volume picks cover tools that write one per job.

Can recruiters tell if AI wrote your cover letter?

Recruiters catch AI writing less often than they believe. In TopResume's test, about a third of 600 hiring managers correctly picked out AI-written resumes, though about one in five said they would reject a candidate for AI-written materials. The bigger risk is a letter that says nothing only you could say, which reads as generated whether or not it was. Our guide to editing an AI cover letter lists the changes that fix that.
